Wayne National Forest

American Indians were the original stewards of the land that is now the Wayne National Forest. Ohio—with its abundant resources and good weather—was the place to be, and this is reflected in the number of Tribes that all consider what is now Ohio as part of their ancestral lands. These Tribes managed the land, farmed domesticated crops, and traded—both in goods and ideas—extensively with neighbors near and far. This long history is recorded both in the countless archaeological sites dotting the Wayne National Forest and in the oral histories shared today.

The Forest Service regularly works with American Indian Tribes throughout the United States. This is a special type of relationship, known as government-to-government consultation. Here at the Wayne National Forest, we consult with Tribes when planning projects. One of the ongoing endeavors at Wayne right now involves seeking traditional ecological knowledge from those Tribes whose ancestral lands are in Ohio. While still in the early stages, we hope to gather a library of knowledge that we can draw on when managing the landscape today.

There are approximately 300 miles of trails open to hiking and backpacking on the Wayne National Forest.

The Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area is the Wayne National Forest's premier developed recreation site and is named after the historic Vesuvius Iron Furnace. The rugged hills and out-cropping cliffs provide a scenic backdrop for this historical and beautiful site.

It contains a 143-acre lake, two family campgrounds and one group campground, beach and swim area, multiple picnic areas, fishing, boating, hiking, scenic overlook and an archery trail. This recreation area is home to the 46-mile Lake Vesuvius Horse Trail System, open from early spring to winter.

3. Shawnee Forest Cabins /Treehouse hot tub cabin– Shawnee National Forest, IL/ Garden of the Gods, Burden Falls, Jackson Falls, Bell Smith Springs

Shawnee Forest Cabins

Stay near Garden of the Gods, and explore Shawnee National Forest in a treehouse cabin with a suspension bridge to a private hot tub. Forest views, hiking trails, and privacy make this a peaceful retreat.

Shawnee Forest Cabins stand out as the most sought-after cabins in Southern Illinois. Positioned as the closest cabins to the renowned Garden of the Gods, it offers the ideal retreat. Whether you seek a romantic getaway or a cozy family haven after exploring nature, Shawnee Forest Cabins provides hot tubs in all cabins, high-speed WiFi, Direct TV, and even a Tesla/EV charger. Choose their famous Treehouse cabin with a suspension bridge leading to a private hot tub among the trees. I have personally stayed in this treehouse. It is not very high in the canopy, but the atmosphere is wonderful. Firepit and barbeque grill at the edge of the forest are inviting, but the suspension bridge to a private pavilion and hot tub is the best part of this stay! Raindrops on the metal roof while soaking in the forest is the most relaxing feature. The treehouse cabin is well crafted. We took day hikes through the Garden of the Gods and saw breathtaking views, and climbed on several rock outcrops. A short drive to Bell Smith Springs Scenic Area, we hiked the trails to the spring and natural bridge. You will want to spend time exploring, and bring your swimsuit! Jackson Falls and Burden Falls are definitely must-see waterfalls! Hiking trails allow up-close views and opportunities to explore the national forest.

Gateway Arch - St. Louis /Scenic Ozark Riverways

Enchanted Forest Treehouse

Whether you are looking to see from the windows on top of the Gateway Arch or take a trip down one of Missouri’s scenic riverways, you will enjoy the comforts of soaking your tired body in the hot tub, or soaking in an aromatherapy stone slipper tub, or stargazing from one of three treetop decks! It is located 45 minutes from the Gateway Arch National Park, 2 minutes off Interstate 44 ( Route 66) at Exit 247 towards Union, MO. With several outfitters in the area, there are multiple options to pick from for a daytime float trip on the Meramec, Current, or Jacks Fork River. After drifting through sparkling water, swimming, sitting on the gravel bar, or gazing at the rock bluffs from your kayak, it is good to relax in a private space that lets you soak up the quiet. Unplug and unwind in the forest. Experience luxury in treetop living with the perfect mix of outdoor adventure and city fun!

We are also 12 miles from Robertsville State Park for short day trips to the Meremac. The Meramec River and Calvey Creek border Robertsville State Park, creating unlimited outdoor opportunities. A boat launch and easy water access make fishing and boating along the peaceful Meramec easy. The park's landscape includes scenic bluffs along the river, and a patchwork of hardwood trees, rich river bottomlands, and clearings that date to when the park was a working farm in the mid-1800s. Two hiking trails allow visitors to explore natural forests. Waterfowl enthusiasts love Robertsville for the diversity of birds that use the park’s waters, and families love Robertsville’s quiet picnic areas.

Gateway Arch National Park - 45 minutes drive

Every Day :9:00 AM–6:00 PM

The Gateway Arch is open year-round Tickets / Itinerary https://www.gatewayarch.com/plan-your-visit/sample-itineraries/

The highlight of a visit to Gateway Arch National Park is a ride to the top of the 630-foot Gateway Arch, for a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The trams are a one-of-a-kind invention, conceived in just two short weeks by an amazing man who never received a college degree. Riding the tram to the top of the Arch is like stepping into the future as it was envisioned in the 1960's. Each of the 16 tram cars, or "pods", can hold five seated persons. There are eight tram cars on the north tram and eight on the south tram. While taking the 4-minute journey to the top, riders may look out a small window for a view of the Arch interior. The car will gently pivot during the ride to keep visitors in an upright position. Once at the top, visitors stay in the observation area for one tram cycle (around 8-10 minutes). This viewing area features 16 windows looking east over the Mississippi River and the Illinois communities and countryside, and 16 windows looking west over the city of St. Louis. When it's time to go back down, visitors will go back in the same tram car number they rode up in.

Eight small capsules, used in each of the two Arch trains.

  • Each train capsule has a 5-foot diameter barrel that is open on the front and closed on the back.

  • There are five seats in each barrel, so the weight of the passengers helps keep the capsule in an upright position.

  • Each capsule rotates approximately 155 degrees during the trip to the top of the Arch. These rotations occur as gentle pivots, similar to what you might experience on a Ferris Wheel.

  • Each of the Arch trams carries 40 passengers and is capable of making a round trip with passengers in around 9 minutes, including loading and unloading passengers in both directions.

  • When running near capacity, each train typically carries 200 to 225 passengers per hour.

  • The trains have been operating for over 25 years, traveling a total of approximately 200,000 miles and carrying over 18 million passengers.

Gateway Arch National Park, Tram Ride to the Top, Museum, Documentary, Virtual Reality Theater, The Arch Store, Arch Café, Park Grounds, Old Courthouse, Old Courthouse Gift Shop, National Park Service Programs, Riverfront Activities: Riverboat Cruises, Private Charters, Riverboat Gift Shop, Paddlewheel Café, Helicopter Tours

Visitors will find several downtown hotspots within walking distance, including historic Laclede’s Landing, trendy Washington Avenue and the recently rebuilt Busch Stadium, not to mention the storied Mississippi River.

The park is famous as an area of exceptional caves and springs; more than 300 of each are known to exist in the park.
